Take a view through a macro lens to the archaeological past with Tiny Egypt, and explore a world full of hidden details

If I were to ask you what you most associate with ancient Egypt, what’s the first thing that would pop into your head?

Pyramids.

Grand temples and tombs.

Coffins and mummies.

Colossal statues of pharaohs and gods.

It’s big. It’s colossal. It’s grand. It’s awe-inspiring.

We think about how impressive these monuments are; the skills, the planning, the resources and the dedication required by the people who created them.

And rightly so. What these people achieved millennia ago without the technology we have to hand is impressive.

But, what about the smaller stuff? Those tiny objects that scream from their museum cases for attention, yet are so easy to miss or too small for the naked eye to see them in all their glory?

There are so many wonderful, fascinating pieces in collections, that have their own stories and their own beauty. Pieces that would’ve been treasured by their original owners. Amulets, scarabs, statuettes, tomb models, jewellery. Objects that we might, in passing, appreciate, but struggle to really pick up their finer details with our normal, non-magnifying eyes.

So, let me introduce to you Tiny Egypt, an independent photography project I’ve designed specifically to bring these small objects to the fore. To give them the time and the attention they deserve. To tell the stories of the common, of the (sometimes) mundane, and of the minute. To celebrate their meaning and the craftsmanship involved in their creation.

To make them, like their larger counterparts, also colossal.

If your interest is piqued, you can explore more of the project using the sections below.

You can see photos from the project, read about how I’ve shaped it, articles about the photography and news updates, and find out how you can get involved.
